About the Station

Access Radio

Access Manawatu is the Community Access Radio Station for Manawatu, one of twelve similar stations that service the whole country.

Access Manawatu exists to provide community broadcasting opportunities, facilities, support and training for individuals and organisations to create programmes that reflect their views and values.

Unlike Commercial stations, we do not cater for a particular demographic, but instead cater to all in our Transmission Area, as well as encouraging all to participate in the creative process.

The station is owned on behalf of the community, and governed by the Manawatu Access Radio Charitable Trust.

We are keen to hear from anyone that wishes to broadcast, and especially from those that wish to broadcast about - or on behalf of - people in minority groups of any description. If you feel that your group, hobby, interest, faith or community (or anything else!) is not represented in the media or is not recognised as much as you want, then contact us.

For more information on the philosophy and history of access radio in New Zealand, you can visit the acab website (Association of Community Access Broadcasters).

Please take the time to look at our site too. There is lots of useful information here for all residents of Manawatu, including Schedules, Shows Pages and Community notices

Coverage

This picture shows our recognised transmission (TX) area. As you can see we broadcast to the Manawatu and a portion of the Rangitikei regions.

Fans of Access Manawatu outside of this highlighted area may experience intermittent reception. We recommend logging on and listening to our live stream, or on demand content!

Those outside our TX area who enjoy Access Radio in general can enjoy:

Radio Kidnappers (To the East)
Arrow FM (To the South East)
Coast Access Radio (To the South)

At present there is no Access Radio station to the north before Community Radio Hamilton.

Fans of Access Manawatu outside of our Transmission area can log on to our website, or experience other access radio stations.

We have many listeners outside our TX area, thanks to favourable geography, climate and / or superior receiving equipment.

New Zealand On Air

Access Manawatu is funded largely by New Zealand On Air, an organisation that exists to ensure the development of New Zealand's culture on the airwaves continues by funding locally-made television programmes, public radio networks and access radio, and to promote New Zealand music by

funding music videos and radio shows. They are also responsible for ensuring remote areas of the country continue to receive radio and television transmission and for funding archiving services to preserve New Zealand programmes and broadcasts for future generations.

Where does access radio come into this? Well, New Zealand On Air sees access radio as a perfect way to ensure that section 36c of the broadcasting act (one of the major requirements of NZ On Air) is fulfilled. This section of the act is as follows:

Section 36(c)

"To ensure that a range of broadcasts is available to provide for the interests of;

Women; and
Youth; and
Children; and
Persons with disabilities; and
Minorities in the community including ethnic minorities; and
To encourage a range of broadcasts that reflects the diverse religious and ethical beliefs of New Zealanders."

The Broadcasting Act - Section 36(c) 1989
